About The Grackle
Short History
In the 100 years of Chestnut Hill College, there have been some literary magazines in existence. In 2007, Dr. Keely McCarthy and Dr. Karen Getzen were approached by Brian Taylor `09 and friends about creating a literary magazine. After some digging in the archives, it was found that one had existed for about three years, many moons ago in the 1980s. Since that conversation, The Grackle has lived and been published pretty consistently since 2007 in print and digital formats.
So why is it called The Grackle?
Grackles are blackbirds that look like they’ve been slightly stretched. The story is that when the original rendition of the magazines started in the 1980s, the campus had a plague (swarm) of grackles.
What is The Grackle?
The Grackle is a student-led magazine that allows students, community members, and alumni to publish their works through a peer-reviewed process. There is both a club component and a one or three-credit class that students are welcome to join.
How do I join the team?
Students are welcome to join the peer-reviewed team by expressing interest at club fairs, by joining the class, or by emailing litmag@chc.edu.
How do I submit my pieces?
The Grackle can only be what it is with the CHC community’s submissions and its peers’ continued input. Many types of submissions are accepted, including picture poems, abstract art, photography, music, and a short thesis. Pieces can be emailed to litmag@chc.edu. Submissions must include First Name, Last Name, Class Year, and School (SUS, SGS, SCPS)(if applicable). We ask that only five pieces be submitted per individual. Alumni, current students, faculty and staff are welcome to submit.
